Introduction of the programme

Summary:
  • Africa RISING overlaps with CRPs 1.1 and 1.2 mainly but has some connections/interactions with other CRPs too.
  • The site selection also overlaps to some extent with CRPs 1.1/1.2 sites. In the longer run we will add some other sites to the mix. For now we focused on AGP woredas as prioritized by GoE, USAid and other donors.
  • The quick win projects connect with the broader program; they were planned to give some tangible results and create some space for thinking about that broader program.
  • By the end of the month, every quick win project manager has to send a report about it to Peter Thorne.

Discussion:
Some comments and questions:
  • Q: How could we do the mapping of projects under CRP1.1 / CRP1.2 with other CRPs? I have spoken to senior IWMI people, how we can map CRP 1.1 and 1.2 with CRP 5? Is it an add-on or it just has interaction?
  • A: I am not sure if it is an add-on but several of our research areas have an overlap on CRP 1.1 and CRP 1.2. --> In the Ethiopia case, there are overlaps between CRP 1.1 and CRP 1.2 same thing with the project in Ghana, I don’t know if it is an add–on but it has interaction with other CRPs. --> USAID needs overlaps b/n CRPs 1.1 and 1.2 as well as interaction with other CRPs

  • Q: There are many reactions with CRP1.1 and CRP 1.2. Are those reactions figured within the sites? Are there some action sites overlapping with the Africa RISING defined sites already?
  • A: Not much, currently we are looking at the already defined sites. --> Partly the broad regions that Chris Legg is looking at are already defined sites --> Some of our sites might not be aligned with defined sites but they have some overlaps... --> One of the things we are seeing with USAID is that we have restricted ourselves to approved sites. Later we are going to see joint activities and integrate some additional sites --> Site selections are based on the USAID mission (in USAID, we have country missions, regional missions); based on that and on donors interest we define funding priorities --> In the case of Ethiopia we focused on AGP woredas, we have seen some potential specifically to that AGP woredas which aligns with our mission --> We have factors some factors in determining woreda and some regions based on funding agency interest and USAID missions as well.

  • Q: The Idea of this meeting was to come up with 3 or 4 page report. We don’t have full report yet? What is the process we need to follow to compile the report?
  • A: By the end of this month you all send your report to me (Peter Thorne)

  • Q: The project seems to be focusing on quick win activities, how is it linking in the long term project plan?
  • A: Quick win projects came about with an organic plan, not to meet the long term plan. This meeting might be helpful to review this. When we see the quick win projects, it has a lot of relevance with all

  • Q: Is it to get quick result or to inform the long term program plan ?
  • A: We wanted to get some space to think through to develop the robust research design and site selection. With USAID we don’t need to go through the process to the whole year we need to get some tangible result that contribute useful info to the overall program.
